Cyborgs, Centaur, and Post-Humans

Shoot a high-resolution self-portrait (head and shoulders) - any pose, any accessories, clothes optional. Use Photoshop to mask and silhouette your portrait - removing it from the background. Alter the photo to reflect your fantasy - a fictional character, cyborg, etc. Watch the movie about masking and silhouetting in the Course Folder: 04_maskinghair.mov

Handmade Books

I found this site that has lots of handmade items, including books, journals, comics, etc. It's mostly for buying and selling things, but it has a pretty nice collection with a lot of different ideas for books...my favorite is the cereal book :)

Best Bookbinding Site

According to my friend, designer and book artist Barbara Zuckerman, the best resource for bookbinding instruction online is here.

Found this link about a nifty binding technique. You have to scroll down a bit.

I found it on this blog which I look at regularly. There's usually something cool.

Mike Perry's illustrative design

Nice work from a designer who used to work for Urban Outfitters in Philadelphia - now in Brooklyn, of course...

Links! Process and Inspiration

Chris showed me www.IllustrationMundo.com, which is a very cool site full of hundreds of illustrator's works and portfolios. A fine place to fish for a muse.

The second blog, School of Ill, is made by a dozen or so regular contributors--all of whom are young illustrators or art students from all around the world. They frequently put up sketches, works-in-process, and final pieces. Many styles and many subjects make for a diverse blog...

Scharf & Matisse Prints

These prints seem to tow the line between abstract and representational. I have the Matisse poster at home and the Scharf prints are at work.

Grunge

Grunge is kind of the term used for rough/dirty/worn/(grungy) looking elements in design. While we're going for decay, it might be worth looking at some of these things. Also I think they're snazzy (Comberg may not...)

you should probably photograph your own, however...

textures are useful for all sorts of things. Live trace, bring them into photoshop, etc.

Drawing in 2 and 3 Point Perspective

Skirkanich Hall - computer visualization in 2/3 point perspective and interior photo - architects: Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. Also see Diller, Scofido and Renfro. And an architectural visualization studio in Poland. For more, search for "architectural visualizations.'

repeating pattern tutorial

Here's a tutorial on making a repeating pattern. Kind of useful.

Icons

These are some images I found when looking for icons and symbols of leafs, as well as icon patterns. I thought it would be interesting to see how many complex forms could be simplified, and how these simplified forms can also be used to make complex  patterns.
